2008 Knockabout Championships

by John C Powers

The annual regattas of the Cape Cod Knockabout Association were sailed July 25-27 in Megansett. The National Championship was a series of five races on Friday and Sunday, and on Saturday we had a two race elimination-championship to decide the SMYRA Championship.

The Megansett Yacht Club was host for this year’s events. Commodore Paul Gallagher, club steward Patrick Petitti, head sailing instructor Anthony Julian, and the entire MYC staff went to extra efforts to make the fleet feel welcome! The fabulous selection of breakfast treats, afternoon snacks and multitude of cold beverages that the racers enjoyed were organized by Judy Powers.

Sixteen Knockabouts from Waquoit, Woods Hole, Yarmouth Sailing and Megansett competed in the three day event. Race Committee management of professional quality was provided by Alan Palevsky. Alan was assisted by the extremely capable team of Paul O’Sullivan, Jim Powers, Chris Loschi, Jim Hoar, Ed Martin, Dick Marcel, Bill and Linda Purdy, and John Kingston.

Andrew Gallagher won the Scudder-Cahoon trophy for the Championship Race, and the Crowell-Small trophy for his combined high point score of 18. Web Collins of Megansett won in his division and second in the championship race to place second in the high point scoring with 16 points. Skip Crowell of Woods Hole had a combined 15 points to take a third in the high point competition.
